About Des Peres, MO - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Early settlers in Des Peres were mostly German immigrant farmers who settled on 80 - 160 acre tracts of land sold off by the U.S. Government. The German immigrants brought with them a love of flowers. You can still see that passion for florals in the town today. The floral industry in Des Peres was given birth by these initial German immigrants and remains today. (Check out Tomasovic and Eckelmann greenhouses.) The seasonal weather creates a demand for appropriate housing for flora and fauna.
Civil War deaths caused a considerable increase in the quantity of destitute and homeless children in the area and the Lutheran Church established the German Lutheran Orphans Home. Tragically, a fire ruined that house in 1935. But, it was rebuilt with donations. Even though the depression was in full swing they were able to gather $155,000. That newer building stands today as the Des Peres City Hall. Over the years, the home served 2,366 children. They were kept warm and fed in the winter, and given a home when there was nowhere else to go. Many of those orphans chose to make their homes in Des Peres upon adulthood. This is legacy that the town is proud of.
Des Peres maintains a system of 6 parks. The 13 acre Phantom Forest and the 10 acre Bittersweet Woods conservation areas are considered "urban wildlife areas" and run neighboring Dougherty Lake, one of the first housing developments in Des Peres. There are sites and trails accessible via Barrett Station Road entrance. The Lodge, which is a community favorite, is a deluxe and modern community center that includes indoor and outdoor aquatic amenities, so you can swim at any time of year. It also houses a fitness center, gymnasium, and meeting spaces for groups and parties.
